After having Emily from Alamy in to talk us through their 'Alamy Student' project I decided it would be the right time to sign up and start exploring the world of stock photography.
It's a fairly standard concept that you upload images to the Alamy library and then people can browse it and find images to use for print, web etc for a fee and since a lot of my photographs could go on the site under one category or another I decided to start uploading.
In order for images to be allowed onto Alamy they have to pass QC (quality control). The automatic system checks for artefacts, sensor dust, a point of focus, image clarity etc and if it's not up to their standards it doesn't go on the library.
I started by uploading 4 images as per the initial QC regulations and initially 2 of the images failed on 'lacking clarity'. I swapped them out for 2 other images and they went through fine.
I then began tagging my images. This is how potential buyers find images and is just as important as the photograph itself, there's no point having great images if people can't find them! Alamy has 3 sections for tagging, Essential, Main and Comprehensive.
Essential - The most relevant words & phrases
Main - The next most relevant words & phrases
Comprehensive - Any other words & phrases.
