Studio Shoot

As highlighted in my personal development plan I don't feel I've had enough studio time this year and so I decided to plan a shoot in order to further my skills and portfolio.

It was a simple shoot organised with a singer songwriter and a fellow photographer off the course. We booked the studio without a specific idea in mind, Sarah just wanted some shots she could use in promotional material and so we planned to just see what happened on the day.

The shoot went really well. We only had 2 hours which isn't that much time when you factor in setting up and planning of shots. I could have planned the shots before to save time but since it was such a last minute shoot there just wasn't time.

Sarah was really happy with the shots, she wanted a dark background so that the images would work well on leaflets, posters etc and so I chose to use some rim lighting to pick her out from the dark background. This worked out really well and I'm glad I experimented with this setup.

Overall it was a positive experience and has pushed me to spend more time in the studio.

Employment
2010 – 2014        Merchandise Sales - K&M Leisure, Runcorn
In my position at K&M Leisure, I have been working with the general public at Manchester United football matches in a commission based sales role. After my first year, I was promoted to managing my own merchandise plot in which I had to maintain stock levels and handle large amounts of money.

2013 – 2014        Assistant photographer - Tate Studio
In my position, I was called upon to photograph weddings, corporate events and also assist in the production of corporate videos. I would often sort through images from shoots and batch edit, export and catalogue images ready for delivery to clients using industry standard software such as Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Camera RAW and Bridge.

2013 – 2014         Photographer - Sportfive, Wilmslow
As a photographer for Sportfive, I had to use my skills and established knowledge of sports photography to capture images at Barclays Premier League football matches throughout the 2013/2014 season, whilst also maintaining a professional attitude when on location photographing teams such as Manchester City & Liverpool FC. After each event I had to ensure my images were edited and tagged ready for upload to stock image websites within a very short time frame.;

Summer 2013     Event photographer - NASS festival (Vision Nine)
I was selected to be part of the media team at NASS (Action Sports & Music Festival) working to tight deadlines to have photographs uploaded to social media minutes after competitions finished and also working as part of the wider media team alongside filmmakers, graphic designers and reporters.

Technical Skills
I am well versed in several industry standard software packages such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Illustrator & Adobe Premier Pro. I also have good knowledge of Microsoft Office and Mac OS. I have been working with Adobe Creative Suite and other software for several years and my knowledge has increased greatly throughout my undergraduate studies. I am very confident with digital photography in both a creative and technical manor and I am able to use DSLRs with full manual controls and have good knowledge of equipment and lighting. With previous experience as an event photographer, I thrive in a fast paced environment and I am confident in delivering high quality work to tight deadlines.

Skills

I have good time management & organisation skills having worked to tight deadlines in my previous roles, in which I had to organise and edit several hundred images ready for delivery to clients within 24 hours. I am able to work as part of a team and alongside other photographers and creatives however I can take on tasks alone and use my initiative. As an individual I am very confident with problem solving both creative and technical challenges. I am able to follow directions and use my initiative to complete tasks quickly and efficiently while maintaining a professional and positive attitude. My passion for image making allows me to go the extra mile and ensure all work completed is of the highest quality.

I was lucky enough to hear back about the position within 24 hours via email and was invited in for an interview. I was asked to bring some samples of my work so I put a small retouching portfolio together. I struggled slightly finding work that fitted that role and so I took a broad selection of work both photography and general design to show a wide range of my skills.

The interview seemed to go well. I first sat down with Wojciech the head studio assistant/senior retoucher and had a formal interview with him. This was pretty standard format and once finished he asked me to complete some tasks on photoshop to see if my technical skills were good enough. I was asked to cut out and retouch some product shots that had just been shot in the studio. I did this with ease and he seemed happy with the speed and quality of the work.

I then had another small interview with the art director but this was more relaxed and gave me an opportunity to find more about the role and the company in general.

After all of this I was shown around the studio and it seemed like a great company to work for. I was told I would hear back in 2 weeks or so.

If nothing else, it was really good to get an interview so quickly and was a great confidence exercise and gave me an idea of the role and the skills needed.

Up until this point I had never considering a retouching position but I feel I am more than capable and so it's something I may look toward after graduation.

Elevator Pitch

DEVELOPING AN ELEVATOR PITCH

Having a strong brand means knowing what you and your products or services stand for and being able to communicate that effectively to your customers.
You will have plenty of opportunity to talk about your business but often very little time to get across your message and ‘win’ a customer. Imagine you have 60 seconds in an elevator with a potential customer, what would you say?
An elevator pitch is a useful marketing tool to use when talking about your business. It is a short and succinct way of communicating what your business does, who it is for and why it is different to your competitors. It must tell your customers what they should expect from your business - a clear and simple message is critical.

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Until todays session I was unsure about what an elevator pitch or what the benefits could be but I'm now a believer. It makes sense to think how many times you meet someone and they ask what you do and you either can't get it across or don't make it sound interesting enough. Writing an elevator pitch seems like the perfect way to sell myself to potential clients and also display confidence in my work.
  • Establish your credibility.
  • Your pitch needs to introduce your idea, not close the deal.
  • Don't be afraid to show off a bit!
  • Have multiple versions prepared.
  • Capture your elevator pitch on video for your blog/website?
  • Identify your goal
  • Explain what you do
  • What is your story?
  • Communicate your USP
  • Engage with a question
  • Put it all together

My Elevator Pitch:

My name is Matt Smith, owner and photographer at Shoot The Future. I am a Manchester based photographer working heavily in sports and events. Have you put time and money into organising an event? Do you want to capture the spirit and feel of the day? My goal is to create exciting images that best capture the atmosphere of events and use my creative flare and extensive technical knowledge to ensure the events I cover are captured perfectly. Recent clients include NASS Festival, SportFive (Premier League) and TateStudio.

Personal Branding

In our recent talks with Fiona we have been looking at personal branding and general online presence.

This is a very relevant topic for us as undergrads and although I have a good online presence it already it hit home that some work was needed.

In my first year as a university student I decided to set up a website for my photography and graphic design in hopes to establish contacts and an audience by the time I graduate. One of the hardest decisions is deciding on a name. I didn't want to take the stereotypical route of using my full name and adding 'Photography' afterwards as I felt this was more than played out.

I started brain storming with some friends and eventually decided to create more of a company than an individual page. Since I take photographs, shoot video and do a lot of graphic design work I didn't want to just create a 'photography' page as I felt this would narrow my target audience.

Eventually I decided on 'Shoot The Future' as an online alias. I got to work on a website with a friend and decided to create a facebook along side the website to keep people up to date with my work.

The website has now been online for 12 months and I've had a lot of positive feedback. It has helped me secure work and when speaking to prospective clients having a website is the most valuable tool in my opinion.

I have since created high quality business cards that allow me to pass my details to clients in a professional manor which have already paid for themselves.

Digital Profiles

I am already very active online and have several digital profile across several sites in order to reach the larget audience possible and spread my work.

Some sites I am already involved with:

Facebook
Twitter
Flickr
Tumblr
Instagram
500px
Blogger
Vimeo
Youtube

I feel some of these sites offer more benefits than others but considering they are all free for at least a basic package makes them priceless tools.

I create a lot of video work alongside my photography and my host of choice is definitely Vimeo. Youtube is very popular and it's a great platform but there is a lot of rubbish on there and it's hard for the good work to filter through where as Vimeo is used much more by professionals and videographers and so generally it's a much better site in my opinion.

I have Vimeo set up to link to my website so anyone who visits my site and see my Vimeo videos and vice versa. I also use the same setup for Flickr. Everything on my website it hosted through Flickr so I'm essentially doubling my audience on both. Anyone who visits my Flickr will be directed to my website and anyone who visits the site will be directed to Flickr.

We have been told to look into more online platforms such as linked in and creative hive. I have very little experience with creative hive and minimal experience with linked in. I always viewed it as a professional business tool but I'm assured there is some benefit for everyone on there and so I'll take a look!
